DULUTH, MINNESOTA My husband and I took a joy ride on the North Shore Scenic Railroad in Duluth. But before boarding we stoked out the depot by taking a stroll through what looked like a perfectly staged railroad station. There were real-sized train engines and the biggest, most detailed model train town I'd ever seen! I've always been fascinated with model trains, maybe because my dad loves them, maybe because of their small scale, maybe both. I could study the craftsmanship for hours. We only had 10 minutes so I looked as efficiently as possible. Luckily I'd decided to take my macro lens along with me. I needed practice using it and bringing no alternatives forces me to learn. It was the perfect lens for the occasion. I snapped my shutter and captured what I thought was the essence of this beautiful mini city. The detail was to die for and the placement of characters made the countless scenes come alive, from the roaming wild animals to the families hanging out on a sunny afternoon. The collection below is only a mere fraction of what was available to admire, and I may need another trip just for more camera play, but hopefully what I did manage to shoot will at least transport the viewer into this tiny world and help celebrate the artists that created it.
